Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced the change of the corporate name, with the expectation that it will be recognized for more than just social networks.
The company will get a division: in one part will be encompassed social applications such as Facebook, WhatsApp, Instagram and Messenger, on the other side other projects such as Quest or Horizon and platforms that will be developed in the future. In other words, Facebook will continue to exist as a social network, but it will be just another product of the “Meta” company.
Zuckerberg’s company will continue to show signs of what it wants to achieve in the future. On several occasions he has mentioned ‘metaverse’ as a space in which to coexist combining aspects of the physical world with the digital spectrum, giving a sense of being together, which he defines as “the next version of the internet”.
Through the Facebook Connect event, Zuckerberg showed different videos of his possible scenarios for this new project. In this sense, he detailed during the presentation that in metaverse it will be possible to work from home and at the same time be in the office in the form of avatars. In addition, users will be able to play games or do sports with their friends and acquaintances, even if they are in other places, “allowing them to share immersive experiences with other people even when they cannot be together, and to do things together that they could not do in the physical world,” the company explained in a statement.
“For many people, I’m not sure there’s ever a good time to focus on the future,” Zuckerberg assures, sharing that investing in the metaverse is going to be a big step forward. Imagine a project to teleport to places with distant people and being able to interact with them in a virtual space. In turn allowing people to forgo screens and experience the effect of presence in virtual reality.
“Facebook was created to connect people and now we will connect people through the metaverse” concluded co-founder Zuckerberg. A change that will surely turn the company around.
